The first and only digital collection of magazines created for Black audiences in West Africa

Pre-publication Announcement

Introducing West African Magazines, a collection showcasing over 50,000 pages of culturally rich and historically significant magazines from West Africa, now available in digital format for the first time.

Spanning decades of transformation, from the 1930s to present day, the collection offers a view into the literary heritage of countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Senegal, during both pre-independence and postindependence eras. The magazines feature fiction, poetry, essays, reviews and more, exploring African and intellectual identity through literature, poetry, art, and cultural commentary. Writers include the Chinua Achebe, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Kofi Awoonor. Researchers and students in history, political science, Africana studies, culture, gender, education, and media studies will discover materials that have almost never been seen outside Africa.

The database has been developed in collaboration with Sabinet, a leading publisher of African materials for libraries, with digitization taking place in Africa.
